Foretune™ is a breakthrough RF front-end technology that integrates tunable passive filtering with adaptive signal cancellation to deliver the industry’s first truly tunable duplexer. It forms the foundation of Forefront RF’s flagship FFM51010 product - the world’s first digitally tunable RF front-end module.

By replacing fixed, band-specific components with a single adaptive solution, Foretune™ enables smaller, simpler, and more power-efficient RF front ends, while significantly reducing material usage and environmental impact compared to traditional architectures.

Why this matters

In conventional RF front-end architectures, each frequency band requires a dedicated SAW or BAW filter. This results in a fragmented array of fixed, band-specific modules that constrain devices to predetermined operating ranges. As the number of supported bands continues to grow, this approach drives:

  • Higher SKU counts
  • Increased insertion loss
  • Rising cost and power consumption
  • Escalating design complexity

These factors limit flexibility for both manufacturers and network operators.

Dynamic reconfiguration across all low band frequencies

Foretune™ removes these constraints by dynamically reconfiguring the RF front-end in real time across the product frequency range. A single hardware platform can support multiple regions, operators, and standards without any physical redesign or band-specific RF variants.

In our first product, FFM51010, Foretune™ supports low-band operation from 612–960 MHz. As the technology evolves, the same architecture is designed to scale to mid-band and high-band frequencies, enabling a fully tunable RF front-end platform spanning the entire mobile spectrum.

Adaptive signal cancellation explained

Adaptive signal cancellation suppresses leakage of the high-power transmit signal into the much weaker receive path within an RF front-end. This capability is critical for simultaneous transmit–receive operation, where even the smallest levels of self-interference can desensitise the receiver and limit overall system performance.

Foretune™ is based on pioneering research by Dr Leo Laughlin, who translated adaptive cancellation from theoretical constructs into practical RF implementations. By developing adaptive algorithms and associated cancellation architectures, this work demonstrated that high levels of self-interference suppression could be achieved across wide instantaneous bandwidths, overcoming a limitation long considered impractical for real-world RF systems.

Achieving wideband adaptive cancellation enabled the realisation of a truly tunable duplexer, forming the foundation for simplified, multi-band RF front-end architectures.

Use cases

Global Cellular Coverage in smartwatches, smartphones and IoT

Global Cellular Coverage in smartwatches, smartphones and IoT

Smartwatches, smartphones and IoT devices increasingly need seamless connectivity across global cellular networks. From eSIM-enabled fitness watches and standalone devices for children and seniors to asset trackers, smart meters, remote cameras and connected mobility, cellular connectivity is expanding across a diverse range of products requiring support across multiple frequency bands, regions and operators.

Foretune™ provides a compact, adaptive RF architecture that dynamically tunes across supported frequency bands, simplifying RF design and enabling global hardware platforms with fewer regional variants—accelerating product launches while reducing development, certification, inventory and operational overhead.

Co-existence in multi-radio RF systems

Co-existence in multi-radio RF systems

Modern connected devices increasingly integrate multiple wireless technologies within compact designs, creating interference between ISM, cellular and proprietary radios with very different transmit powers, bandwidths and receiver sensitivities. This can reduce receiver sensitivity, communication range and reliability, while conventional mitigation techniques can restrict simultaneous operation or increase design complexity.

Foretune™ uses adaptive signal cancellation to suppress unwanted interference directly at RF, preserving receiver performance while supporting concurrent radio operation. This reduces reliance on physical antenna separation, filtering and scheduling, enabling greater flexibility in increasingly complex multi-radio product designs.

Satellite direct-to-device cellular RF front-end

Satellite direct-to-device cellular RF front-end

Satellite direct-to-device connectivity is rapidly emerging as a complementary layer to terrestrial cellular networks, extending coverage to remote and underserved locations while supporting smartphones, IoT and other connected devices. As deployments scale globally, satellite operators must support diverse spectrum allocations and evolving cellular bands.

Foretune™ provides a compact, tunable RF front-end architecture capable of supporting multiple frequency bands within a single global SKU. Its adaptive design enables satellite platforms to address regional spectrum requirements and accommodate future band deployments without redesigning the RF front-end for each new frequency.
