As mobile radio communication protocols have progressed from 2G to 5G, signal processing functions have moved from digital hardware to software, providing much-needed flexibility. Today’s modem chipsets implement the majority of processing in software. 

However, the increase in the number of mobile bands has meant more fixed frequency SAW and BAW filters and switches are needed in the RF front-end hardware, adding footprint, cost and complexity. 

This reliance on this costly and inflexible legacy hardware is limiting front-end designs and network utilization. The ability to support increasing numbers of bands or products in multiple global regions becomes much more challenging. 

Forefront RF has developed a flexible and adaptive front-end design which can be dynamically tuned across the entire low-band frequency spectrum, covering all bands and bandwidths.  

The result? Full software configurability of the RF front-end hardware, unlocking software defined radio. 

The result a RF front-end module that covers all bands in the 612 to 960 MHz frequency range - fully software configurable, thereby unlocking software defined radio. 

Forefront’s compact FFM51010 module is a mere 6 x 4.5mm in dimension. 

This demo shows the module adjusting to the required frequency band in real time, with performance metrics in line with today’s 3GPP and network operator requirements. 

Shown in this interactive demo are LTE bands 17, 28 and 8. 

Customers will be able to connect to all low band frequencies, in a form-factor that takes up less PCB space that current technology whilst at the same time greatly simplifying the mobile radio front-end design. 

The tuning technology can respond to antenna impedance changes resulting in lower insertion losses and stronger signals.
