Every year original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) face the daunting task of forecasting demand for multiple regional variants of the same product to fulfil market requirements.
An American smartphone might carry bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 25, 26, 66, and 71, while its European counterpart might support bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, and 20.
For consumers, these geographical differences are of little consequence and only become apparent when travelling abroad when they may experience patchy coverage or slower data rates.
OEMs, on the other hand, have been forced into regional SKUs due to spectrum fragmentation and RF front-end constraints. The result: higher costs, logistical inefficiencies, stranded inventory, and a suboptimal global user experience.
The real bottleneck has not been baseband — it has been the lack of tunability in the RF front end, particularly duplexers. With advances in reconfigurable architectures and self-interference cancellation, the industry now has a credible path toward a single, globally adaptable device.
