Physical Design and Layout Engineer

Role Description

Forefront RF’s products comprise our adaptive passive cancellation (APC) RF hardware, and software algorithms that control the signal cancellation.

The APC circuits will be implemented using a range of established electronics manufacturing processes. Working with the rest of the development team, you will be creating the physical design and layout databases needed by our suppliers to get our parts made and assembled. You will oversee and manage the manufacture and assembly of our prototypes.

Main responsibilities

  • Layout the circuits for each component in the system using appropriate software tools
  • Ensure that Forefront RF’s components conform to the physical design rules required by our manufacturing partners. This could include the import and assessment of Design Kits from various manufacturers prior to design
  • Collaborate with the Filter and RF systems engineers to verify the electrical performance of your layouts
  • Produce manufacturing data bases / drawings to enable the components to be manufactured
  • Produce assembly drawings to enable the components to be assembled
  • Liaise with manufacturing partners to manage the manufacture and assembly of Forefront RF’s components.

Key Skills and knowledge

  • A native ability to think in 3 dimensions
  • Familiarity with multi-layer photolithographic etch and plate manufacturing processes
  • Familiarity with producing full manufacturing and assembly drawings, commonly used in high precision electronics manufacturing using industry-standard CAD tool flows
  • Knowledge of Cadence Virtuoso analogue RF IC layout tools would be an advantage
  • Familiarity with 3D mechanical CAD drawing packages (e.g. AutoCad or SolidWorks) would be an advantage
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • A collaborative team player

Key relationships

  • This role reports to and takes direction from the CTO
  • Filter Engineer & RF Systems Engineer – The geometries of key parts of the circuit and circuit schematics will be defined by the Filter Engineer and RF Systems Engineer
  • Component manufacturing and assembly partners – the Layout Engineer will manage the day-to-day technical interface with these partners

Essential Experience – at least 5 years

  • Layout and design of fine geometry RF PCBs
  • Close working with RF circuit and system designers for design of critical RF traces
  • Layout database completion and documentation for manufacture and assembly
  • Liaison with and day to day management of suppliers

Desirable Experience

  • Layout and design of laminate-based RF IC packaging using flip chip
  • Getting prototypes designed and built in a start-up environment
  • RFIC layout using Cadence tools

Academic Qualifications

Essential Academic Qualifications

  • BSc in Electronics, Communication systems or similar subject

Desirable Qualifications

  • Formal training in advanced electronics manufacturing methods
  • Formal training in use of Cadence Virtuoso RFIC layout tools

Application and selection process

Joining a new company is a big step for both sides, so we need to take a bit of time to get to know one another. So, if you think you’d like to contribute to Forefront RF and share in its success, then drop us a CV and covering letter using the contact form below. We’d like to know why you’d like to join us and what you’ll contribute.

If we see the potential too, the next step will be an informal video-based chat to fill in the gaps. Then, we’ll invite you into our office for a more structured interview with a few team members. This may include some technical tests. We’ll expect you to come armed with lots of questions to check us out too. If that goes well, we’ll make an offer or provide honest constructive feedback (if you ask us). In some cases, we may ask for a 2nd interview with someone from our wider network, especially if your talents are quite different from our own.

Please note, we use the personal information you submit to assess your suitability for the role, to conduct testing and interviews, to support you with any access requirements or reasonable adjustments we might need to make, and to come to a decision about your appointment.

We encourage all candidates to apply directly. If you are working with a recruitment agency on an exclusive basis and they are not on our preferred supplier list, then we may not be able to progress your application.

Recruitment agencies – please do not send us unsolicited CVs if you are not on our preferred supplier list. If you do so, we reserve the right to contact the candidate directly and your T&Cs will not apply.
