Forefront RF has been shortlisted for the ‘Best Innovation in Wireless Technology’ award in the 2021 CW Technology & Innovation Awards for its Adaptive Passive Cancellation (APC) technology.
The CW Technology and Innovation Awards shine a spotlight on outstanding technology firms and individuals, from innovative start-ups and outstanding achievers to the most impactful use cases within industry. The ‘Best Innovation in Wireless Technology’ award recognises new innovations, released since January 2020, in the broad field of wireless technology.
Forefront RF was shortlisted for use of APC technology in its revolutionary chip. The unique APC chip cancels out the transceiver’s self-interference, enabling a smartphone’s receiver to “hear” the weakest signals while transmitting at full power. Forefront RF’s chip replaces banks of RF filters and switches with a low-cost RF circuit that can be tuned over a wide frequency range, reducing the RF front end space as well as cost.
Founder of Forefront RF, Julian Hildersley was thrilled to hear that the company is a finalist, saying “To be shortlisted for this award is great recognition of our technology and our passion to revolutionise the RF front-end industry.”
For decades, mobile phones have relied on crystal filters to separate their transmit and receive signals. With technology innovation driving spectrum demand, the sheer number of filters required in 5G makes this untenable and a singular “world phone” impossible. Tipped to be as disruptive as SAW filters, our APC chip is set to change the way global smartphones are designed.”
Commercialising his research from the University of Bristol, Dr Leo Laughlin founded fabless semiconductor company, Forefront RF together with Julian Hildersley in 2020. In August this year, the company secured £1.5m in seed funding and Cambridge-based investor and advisor, Phil O’Donovan, joined the duo as Chairman.
The award winners will be announced at the CW International Conference on Tuesday on 9 November 2021.

About Forefront RF
Forefront RF, a Cambridge-based fabless semiconductor company, was co-founded in 2020 by Dr Leo Laughlin and Julian Hildersley to change the way global smartphones, wearables, and IoT devices are designed. Commercialising academic research from the University of Bristol, Forefront RF’s chip enables connected devices to operate across the increasingly wide range of XGen (3G to 6G) mobile telephony frequency bands. Forefront RF’s cancellation technology redesigns the radio frequency (RF) system in a wireless product enabling manufacturers to simplify the design and deliver frequency agnostic products, whilst reducing cost and supply chain waste.
