Algorithm Engineer

Role Description

Forefront RF’s products comprise our adaptive passive cancellation (APC) RF hardware, and software algorithms which control the signal cancellation. These cancellation algorithms are critical to achieving the high levels of cancellation required, making them a vital component of the overall product.

The Algorithm Engineer’s role is to develop tuning algorithm software for the APC circuits, and support integration of these algorithms with APC hardware operating within a 3GPP LTE/5GNR physical layer.

 

Main responsibilities

  • Design, simulate and implement candidate tuning algorithms
  • Integrate tuning algorithm software with circuit simulation software for optimisation and testing in simulation
  • Work with the APC circuit designers to understand circuit imperfections and ensure algorithms will function with non-ideal implementations
  • Work with hardware/platform engineers to define interfaces between the tuning algorithm and the surrounding sub-systems
  • Support integration of tuning algorithm software with 3GPP LTE/NR physical layer DSP on target hardware platforms
  • Define and oversee tuning algorithm testing in conjunction with the rest of the team

Key Skills

  • DSP Programming in MATLAB/Python and C/C++
  • A good understanding of 3GPP physical layer specifications (LTE and 5GNR)
  • System-level knowledge of RF system architectures and performance metrics
  • Ability to follow software design and development good practices (e.g. version control systems)
  • A flexible and creative approach to problem solving and rapid design iteration
  • Ability to work autonomously with little supervision
  • Ability to collaborate with a wide range of team members and colleagues
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

Key relationships

  • This role reports to and takes direction from the CTO
  • Filter Engineer – For understanding circuit imperfections and collaborating on system modeling
  • Platform Engineer – For interface definition, software integration, debug, and system test

Experience

Essential Experience

  • Developing DSP software/algorithms for physical layer processing or RF control
  • Developing software in MATLAB/Python
  • Bringing a system together as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable Experience

  • Working with RF circuits and systems
  • Working with adaptive RF circuits (e.g. digital pre-distortion for PA linearisation)
  • Implementing optimisation algorithms (e.g. iterative methods)
  • Working on interference cancellation technology

Academic Qualifications

Essential Academic Qualifications

  • BSc grade 2.i or above in Electronics, Communication systems or similar subject

Desirable Academic Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD in Electronics, Communication systems or similar subject
